Each piece is unique and one-of-a-kind, sewn and dyed one at a time in North Carolina, USA. Michael Smith has been making wearable fiber art for over 25 years. The technique he uses is a non-traditional Shibori.
Kane Sells Studio is a contemporary Shibori studio. Sustaining itself for over 20 years, they have hand dyed, discharged, airbrushed and dyed 100% silks using the ancient Japanese techniques of Arashi (pole wrapping) & Itajimi (board clamping) Shibori. Adding stitch resists to their repertoire, they utilize these techniques to hand dye fabrics in a strong and classic palette. Self taught artists, they design and create form the passion of expression. their desire to invent is evident in their work.
Carter Smith has been creating museum quality shibori fabrics for 40 years. Shibori is an elaborate technique involving pleating and tying fabric then applying dyes in layers. Carters shibori pieces have been exhibited in galleries and museums internationally.
The one of a kind fabric is also used in the original bias cut designs. These have been worn in film, used in ballet productions and they excel in their ability to flatter all women.
The designs are timeless, seasonless and completely unique. The fabric is organic and joyous in its beauty and sensuous comfort. The few pieces of fabric that remain are handcrafted back into yardage and sewn into special designs. Zero waste.
Peggotty creates all of the fabric for her garments through hand painting, discharge, devoré, resists, and washes. All of the work is done in her home studio.
Each piece of white silk is treated like a blank canvas on which her ideas and inspirations are portrayed. The fabric is stretched in frames, suspended and painted with fiber reactive dyes. The dyes are steam set to make the color permanent, the fabric is then washed, cut and sewn into the finished garment or scarf. This allows her not only to be involved in the garment design, but the total creative process as well.
Her inspiration comes from the landscape, art of the southwest and the world around us. Her work has been exhibited internationally and has been featured in exclusive galleries and boutiques for the past 18 years.
